E-bike or a regular bike for the Chochołowska Valley — how to choose

Rower elektryczny na górskim szlaku w Tatrach

You’re facing a decision: a regular mountain bike or an e-bike for a trip to the Chochołowska Valley (Dolina Chochołowska)? There’s no single right answer — it all depends on your fitness, who you’re riding with and how much you want to spend. The trail to the mountain hut on Polana Chochołowska is about 8.5 km one way, it runs over gravel and stones, and in places it climbs steeply. One rider will cover that same stretch with a smile, another out of breath. Below we break the choice down into its essentials.

Mountain bike — for those who enjoy the effort

Our mountain bikes are proven machines from Scott, Kross and Kellys, built precisely for stony terrain. If you ride regularly, like to feel you’ve put in some work, and don’t mind a solid dose of exercise — this is your choice. The ride to the hut on a mountain bike usually takes 50–70 minutes one way, depending on your pace and the number of stops.

It’s also the most economical option: PLN 15 per hour, PLN 60 for a full day, PLN 80 for 24 hours. If budget matters and you’re in good shape, it’s hard to beat.

Time to the hut one way: mountain bike 50–70 min, e-bike 35–45 min. Pedal assist shortens the hardest climbs by a dozen or so minutes and a lot of effort.

E-bike — when you want to go further without the strain

An electric bike changes the character of the whole trip. The pedal assist “eats up” the hardest climbs, so you’ll reach the hut in about 35–45 minutes and have far more energy left along the way to take in the surroundings. It’s the option for less-trained riders, for parents travelling with children, and for anyone who wants to enjoy the trail rather than fight it.

The e-bike pricing is PLN 80 for 2 hours, PLN 140 for 4 hours and PLN 220 per day. You pay more than for a mountain bike, but in return you get range and comfort that you quickly come to appreciate on the stony climbs.

The surface is gravel-and-stone and steep in places — this is not a paved path. On a profile like this, e-bike pedal assist makes the biggest difference.

E-bike FULL — full suspension for a bumpy road

If you’re after maximum comfort on uneven ground, it’s worth considering the FULL version of the e-bike, that is, one with full suspension. It absorbs the shocks from stones and potholes far better than a standard model, which on a gravel-and-stone surface makes a real difference for your back and wrists. Prices: PLN 100 for 2 hours, PLN 160 for 4 hours, PLN 240 per day. It’s the choice for people who value a comfortable ride over saving money.

We also rent the mountain bike by the hour (PLN 15/h) and for 24 hours (PLN 80); the e-bike and e-bike FULL are available in 2-hour, 4-hour and daily packages. You’ll find the full, up-to-date price list for all models on a separate page.

How long the trip will really take you

When planning your day, add to the riding time your breaks, photo stops and a moment’s rest at the hut. The quoted 50–70 minutes on a mountain bike and 35–45 minutes on an e-bike are just the ride time one way, at a steady pace. In practice, if you really want to soak up the surroundings, it pays to plan the trip with plenty of spare time. Your choice of gear affects not only the effort but also how many calm moments you’re left with simply to be in the valley, rather than just to turn the pedals. For those who want to ride without racing the clock, electric pedal assist can be the deciding argument.

E-bike delivery and a few practical details

If you choose electric bikes, we have a handy perk for you: we deliver e-bikes free within a 15 km radius, for orders of two or more. That’s convenient when you’re staying nearby and prefer to start your ride straight from your accommodation. A mountain bike gives you a workout, an e-bike gives you peace of mind. The choice depends not on which is better, but on why you’re heading into the mountains.
